HOLLADAY— Chelsey Mikalauski pitched 14 shutout innings as the Mountain View Bruins won two games in the 4A state tournament and find themselves battling the Murray Spartans in the next round as they try to make their way out of the consolation bracket.

Katie Welling hit two home runs and a double to lead the Bruins at the plate in the two games, the second being a 6-0 victory over Utah County rival Springville.

"That's a first," said Welling of her two home runs. "They're my first of the season, and I've never done anything like this in the state tournament. I've been in a slump, but today I was seeing the ball better. I just hope it continues tomorrow."

Mountain View coach Cal Jones noted that Welling does have that kind of power, and "she can swing like that really well."

He also couldn't say enough about his pitcher, who only gave up eight hits over her two games and hurled a two-hitter against the tough-hitting Red Devils. "She did everything today that I wanted her to do, and we had good defense behind her and played well from the plate."

Mikalauski also helped herself from the plate with a triple to deep right field that scored two runs and gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against the Red Devils, who gave up all six runs in the first three innings before shutting down the Bruins' bats the rest of the way.

In their first game of the day, Mountain View took out Payson 10-0, sending the Lions home with two losses as they racked up eight runs in the final three innings. Mallary Gillespie went 3-4 with two RBIs, Welling added her home run, JaNae Wright hammered two doubles, and the Bruins' defense recorded a rare double play to finish off the Lions.

"It's only two wins, but we'll take them," said Jones. "We've gotta start there. Two years ago we had a great experience up here, and some of our seniors were here. They know what it's like." The Bruins won the tournament two years ago and were ousted by the Murray Spartans in their final game last year.

To get into the game against the Bruins, Springville used an explosive third inning to score eight runs on three hits and three walks, sending Lone Peak packing 12-2 from the 4A state softball tournament. The Red Devils only had to go five innings to dispatch the Knights as Natalie Nance smacked a triple for three RBIs, and Keri Wilson doubled for two. The Knights recorded five hits and Jayne Burgess recorded the lone RBI.
