About 15 people were evacuated from a downtown Salt Lake building late Wednesday afternoon during a fire that left about $5,000 in damage.

About 4 p.m., a fire started on a second-floor apartment of the building, near 650 South and State, which also houses the Homeless Youth Resource Center in the basement. Most of the people evacuated were from the resource center, Salt Lake fire spokesman Scott Freitag said.

The fire started in a back room in the apartment that the occupant, who was not home at the time, used for storage. Flames were in the wall and inside and outside the building, Freitag said.

Firefighters have not determined a cause but the fire is not suspicious, Freitag said. People were allowed back inside about an hour later.
