SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A convicted rapist who was released in March has been arrested for failing to update his registration as a sex offender — a potential "third strike" that could put him back in prison for life.

Cary Verse, 33, was arrested Thursday at a San Jose motel and booked on one felony count of failing to update the registration, which he is required to do every 90 days, police said.

Verse has been in and out of prison since he was 17 for sexual assaults, most recently the 1992 rape of a homeless man.
