BRIGHAM CITY — A short but intense rainstorm with quarter-size hail damaged gardens and caused flooding late Sunday afternoon.
About 5 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for part of Box Elder County. Within the hour, "spotters" called the weather service's offices near the Salt Lake City International Airport reporting 1.10 inches of rain fell in a 12-14 minute period, lead forecaster Dave Sanders said.
Eric Rasmussen was among a group who tried to divert water from a neighbor's back yard, near 100 North and 1100 East in Brigham City. A window was broken, and the neighbors were not home.
"I know there was at least 6 inches (of water) in their basement. There was a lot of water coming down. There probably was 3-4 feet of gravel in their back yard that wasn't there before," Rasmussen said, adding they live by a gravel pit.
