Two golfers with Utah connections have joined the field for next week's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York.

BYU golfer Oscar Alvarez was the only qualifier to survive the sectional in Sunriver, Ore., where 21 golfers competed. Alvarez, a junior-to-be from Colombia, fired rounds of 68 and 77 to advance, defeating Alex Prugh of Spokane in a playoff.

Also, Provo's Dan Forsman was one of 33 golfers in the 184-man field at Columbus, Ohio, to qualify for the Open. Forsman had rounds of 67 and 71 to finish in a tie for 15th place.

Utah golfers who weren't successful in qualifying included Jay Don Blake, Scott Miller, Tommy Johnson, Jimmy Blair, Sterling Clark and Jesse Hibler.
