I see that the taxi situation is still aboil in Salt Lake City. Mayor Anderson wants more taxis available to help remedy in some inexplicable way the city's downgrading for "lack of nightlife." And we have complaints from those who depend on UTA for lack of weekend transportation.
For several years I have been advocating licensing small jitney buses (call them "shuttles" if you prefer) to operate on regular schedules on routes of their own choosing. If the mayor is serious about restricting limousine operations in favor of expanded taxi service, I'd hope he'd instead consider licensing some small entrepreneurs to start operating a few dozen jitney buses.
This form of transportation is used in Madrid, Paris, Mexico City and elsewhere. Why doesn't Salt Lake City adopt this cost-free and highly satisfactory solution to our transportation needs before building more multimillion-dollar highways and street railway extensions or trying to limit the fare structure of other private entrepreneurs like limousine operators? It's still not too late.
