CINCINNATI — A driver pulled over for littering early Friday fled a deputy and slammed his car into a utility pole, splitting the vehicle in half and killing four passengers, authorities said.

The driver fled before emergency personnel arrived at the crash, Hamilton County sheriff's officers said. Officers said they found a loaded handgun and 5 1/2 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms at the scene of the car crash.

About four hours later, authorities received a 911 call seeking help for a man reportedly injured in a bicycle crash. They determined the man, Jarred Hunley, was actually the driver of the car and arrested him.

Hunley, 23, of Columbus, was wanted in southern Ohio for failing to appear in court on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine, officers said. He was hospitalized Friday in fair condition.
