Obituary: Mary Ellen Madsen Peacock

1915 ~ 2004

Mary Ellen Madsen Peacock, 88, of Manti, died peacefully, July 5, 2004 in Mayfield, Utah.

Mary was born on September 21, 1915 to Ernest and Della Tuttle Stringham Madsen and grew up in Manti. She attended local schools, graduating as valedictorian from Manti High School before serving an LDS mission in the Northwestern States.

Mary married John Blaine Peacock in the Manti Temple. They have four sons: John Bruce (Joyce), Phillip M. Deceased, Steven L. (Regina), and Richard (Jolene).

Mary devoted her life to her three main loves: her family, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and education. As a young woman, Mary used her understanding of the Gospel and human nature to instruct the Gospel Doctrine Class. She taught Gospel Doctrine for close to 40 years. When her children were grown, Mary returned to college, graduating magna cum laude/Phi Kappa Phi from Brigham Young University. The next 25 years were spent teaching English in the South Sanpete School District. Mary cherished the many friendships, with colleagues and students, built while teaching at Manti High. Cards, letters, and visits from former students were always enjoyed. She was an accomplished writer, historian, genealogist, and musician. When she retired from teaching, Mary spent her time at the family history center and doing genealogy.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by three sons, nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Friday, July 9, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Services will be held Saturday, July 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the Manti Utah Stake Center with a viewing preceding the services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Manti City Cemetery under the direction for Buchanan Mortuary.

The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Mary Ellen Madsen Peacock Scholarship Fund at Snow College.
