A man who allegedly kidnapped his estranged wife and ransacked her apartment was arrested in Roy Tuesday.
The 36-year-old man was going through a divorce with his 32-year-old wife. On Tuesday, he was scheduled to appear in court for a previous domestic violence charge. Instead, he went to her apartment when she wasn't home, said Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham.
The man destroyed many of his wife's personal belongings, said Whinham, then hid in the apartment and waited for her to return.
When his wife returned to the apartment about 11 a.m. the husband confronted her with a handgun, forced her to undress and beat her, Whinham said. He also threatened to kill himself and make her watch.
After convincing the man that she was having an asthma attack and needed her medicine, she escaped to the neighbor's house, where police were notified.
When police arrived, the man was exiting the apartment to look for his wife. He had left his gun inside the apartment and was taken into custody without incident, Whinham said.
The man was booked into jail for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and felony criminal mischief because damage to the apartment was more than $5,000.
