Van Alan Smith of Dallas, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004.
Van was born November 23, 1927 in Los Angeles, eldest son of Viv and Madelyn Smith. He was a graduate of East High School in Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah. After service in the United States Army he was honorably discharged and entered the finance business. He moved to Dallas and went to work for Chilton Corporation in 1968, retiring in 1989 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Van played contract bridge and was an outstanding yachtsman and past commodore of Rush Creek Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Cross Country Club of Dallas as well as the Plano Pacers and was an extremely competitive local age-group runner. Van also enjoyed golf and was a member of Royal Oaks Country Club.
His survivors include his lovely wife of 55 years, Ann, his brothers, Tom and Paul, of Salt Lake City, son, Philip and wife, Patricia of Leawood, Kansas and his two grandsons of whom he was so proud, Philip Jr., a sophomore at Trinity University, and David, a freshman at the University of Kansas.
Private services were held in Dallas. Donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
