Attorney General John Ashcroft, accompanied by security personnel, showed up at Norfolk (Va.) Naval Station to greet his son, whose ship had returned from duty in the Persian Gulf region.
But for Ashcroft and his wife, Janet, Sunday's homecoming wasn't just a family reunion. He said his son, Ensign Andy Ashcroft, needed help moving into a new apartment. "I brought the pickup truck," Ashcroft told WVEC-TV of Norfolk.
The younger Ashcroft said he had their day all planned. "I am going to put them all to work right away," he said with a grin.
Andy Ashcroft is assigned to the Aegis guided missile destroyer USS McFaul. The McFaul left Norfolk Feb. 19 as part of the Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group and has patrolled the Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
