Utah connections

Ex-Cougar volleyball star Ryan Millar started at middle blocker for the United States, which ended a nine-match Olympics losing streak with a win over the Netherlands. Millar had a pair of blocks and two key kills late in the second set.

Mark Chay, a BYU athlete swimming for Singapore, finished last in his eight-man heat in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 52.83.

American basketball player and new Utah Jazzman Carlos Boozer scored six points and added five rebounds, as the United States edged Greece, 77-71. Boozer made two of his three field goals, but only two of his six free throws in 16 minutes of action.

Current Jazz point guard Carlos Arroyo had another huge game for Puerto Rico, only this time in a losing cause. Arroyo scored 25 points with three steals and two assists before fouling out late in the 98-90 loss to Lithuania. He was 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 10-for-11 from the foul line. His teammate, former Jazzman Jose Ortiz, scored four points with four rebounds.

Ute center Andrew Bogut led Australia to an 83-59 victory over Angola in men's basketball. Bogut scored 16 points with 11 rebounds — both team highs. He was 7-for-7 from the field, including a 3-pointer, but was just 1-of-5 from the foul line.

Former Jazz draft pick and current Cleveland Cavalier Sasha Pavlovic played sparingly and didn't score as his Serbia-Montenegro team edged Italy, 74-72.

Jeff Guiel, a former Salt Lake Stinger, started in left field in Canada's 7-0 win over the Netherlands in baseball. Guiel had one hit in four at-bats and scored a run. Teammate Ryan Radmanovich, a former Buzzman, started in right field. He didn't get a hit in four tries. Pitcher Eric Cyr, formerly of the Stingers, didn't see action.

Clay Bellinger, a former Stinger, went hitless in four attempts for Greece in Chinese Taipei's 7-1 victory. Bellinger started at third base for the host country.

Weather

The mercury climbed to 86 degrees under mostly clear skies. Today's forecast was for partly cloudy skies and a high of 86.
