"Together Forever"

Mary Evelyn Mortensen Lund, age 88, died Sunday, August 15, 2004 in Bountiful, Utah of pneumonia and other causes incident to age.

She came into the world on February 19, 1916, the sixth of eight children born to Lorenzo Hans Mortensen and Catherine May Thomson in Levan, Juab County, Utah. She married Jewell Grover Lund of Fountain Green, which is about 20 miles to the east of Levan. They met at a dance in Nephi and were married a few months later in the Manti Temple on December 18, 1934. After living in Fountain Green for a few years, they moved to the Salt Lake Valley where Jewell had employment, eventually settling in Murray, where they lived for 50 years on Wahlquist Lane on west 5900 South. It was there for the most part that they raised their four sons and one daughter. Evelyn was a woman of gentle spirit and loving heart and her family received a full measure of her attention and devotion. For years, even as the family continued to expand until the numbers became a challenge in their small and humble home, Evelyn always hosted the entire family for Christmas, birthdays, other holidays, summer picnics and many other special "just drop in" occasions. Evelyn always made it clear that building strong family bonds even across three and four generations came first with her. To this day if one was to ask her grandchildren, grown now with their own children, they will tell you that their favorite memories of childhood were going to "Grandma Lund's" house. And one of her daughters-in-law recently said, "I learned how to be a grandma by watching Evelyn."

Evelyn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving most often as a teacher of the children and youth. She taught Primary several times, but served as a Sunday School teacher for 24 years straight at one point. As her children grew older, she accepted a job as a cook at one of the elementary schools in the Murray School District. She stayed in that employment for 19 years, finally retiring in 1976 in order to be with Jewell, who had also retired. She was already a proficient cook and thousands of elementary school children (and their teachers!) were beneficiaries of "Mrs. Lund's great cooking." After Jewell's death in 1995, she sold their home in Murray and moved to Bountiful to be closer to her children and was still living there at the time of her death.
