1936 ~ 2004
Barbara Kay Brockbank Webber, 68, died peacefully from cancer on August 18th, 2004, with her husband and loving family by her side.
Kay was born June 1st 1936 in Spanish Fork, Utah, the youngest of nine daughters to Isaac Elmer Brockbank and Elsie Booth Brockbank. She grew up in Provo, Utah. She attended local schools and graduated from Brigham Young University with a double major in Psychology and Elementary Education.
Barbara married Robert Reed Webber in the Salt Lake Temple on Nov. 27, 1957. They made their home New York for many years before moving to Sedona, Ariz.
Kay was always interested in education and after her marriage she received her Master's Degree in psychology from N.Y.U. and another Master's Degree in social work from Columbia University. Always active in community and humanitarian affairs, she was elected to the Board of Supervisors in New Castle, N.Y. and served on the Planning Board of that city. She was a member of the Chappaqua, N.Y. Board of Education and an officer in the League of Women Voters of Westchester County; Community out-reach Representative for United Way's Women's Center. She organized classes and programs for the Children's Village, Dobbs Ferry N.Y., placing high risk children in foster care. For many years she was a Private Family Counselor for L.D.S. social services in the New York area. Kay recently was serving as a Docent in the Museum of Northern Arizona. She received many awards for her community and church service.
Kay and Bob traveled the world, visiting more than 80 countries. They were avid hikers in the Grand Canyon and other mountain areas.
One of the greatest highlights was their LDS mission in Capetown, SA. While there they observed the lack of educational opportunities for young black women, and established the Brockbank Education Fund to provide scholarships for young black women. This fund, which has grown each year, allowed 21 women this past year to attend college, one of whom graduated at the head of her class and is now attending medical school in Durban, S.A.
The Webbers reared five remarkable children all of whom graduated from BYU. They are Robert Isaac (Virginia), Irvine CA; David Brockbank (Cecilia), Sandy, UT; Johnathan Stuart (Wendy), Trabucas Canyon, CA; Nancy Ellen (Brad) Haws, Charlottesville, VA; and Elizabeth Kay (Eric) Mostoller, Glendale, AZ: They also have 22 beloved grandchildren.
Kay was supportive of her husband Bob, President and CEO of the Robert I. Webber Company, and as he served as Bishop and Mission Counselor in the LDS, New York mission
