PLEASANT GROVE — A fire that broke out Friday at a Pleasant Grove home appears to have been started after two three-year-olds were playing with matches, according to Pleasant Grove Fire Department Chief Mark Hales.

The two children were cousins and were playing under the stairwell in the basement of a home at 340 E. 300 North. The grandmother of one of the children, who owns the home, was not in the house at the time of the fire. A daughter-in-law, the mother of one of the children, was present, as well as a few other children.

The exact series of events is still under investigation. According to Officer Britt Smith of the Pleasant Grove Police, a neighbor who lives across the street and is related to the grandmother called to report the fire after the woman and children had evacuated the home.

Fire crews responded and extinguished the fire in less than half an hour. The blaze was confined to the one-room basement area but likely caused at least $60,000 worth of damage, said Hales.
