1916 ~ 2004

Lucile Glauser Butterfield, age 88, died peacefully in her home on July 17, 2004, surrounded by family members. Lucile lived a very active life of service to her community, to her church, and she supported her family with love and dedication.

She was born January 8, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Swiss immigrants John Glauser and Lena von Niederhausern Glauser. Lucile attended Whittier Grade School and Roosevelt Junior High School, and graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City. She and Alton (Tony) Wallace Butterfield were married on December 7, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 15, 1940. They lived in Riverton, Utah, from 1934 until 1941, when they moved to Rawlins, Wyoming, and Mr. Butterfield went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. They raised their family in Rawlins before moving back to their roots in Salt Lake City in 1976, after Mr. Butterfield retired from the Union Pacific. He also served seven terms as a State Legislator from Carbon County, Wyoming, during these years.

Lucile was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various positions throughout her life. In Rawlins, she served for six years as a Relief Society president, diligently helping raise $170,000 with her ward to build a new chapel; she was also a Gospel Doctrine teacher and a Primary counselor. After moving back to Salt Lake City, she worked for 10 years in the Salt Lake Temple. A highlight of her life was the 27 years she volunteered at LDS Hospital, delivering flowers and working in the gift shop. She loved gardening and working in her yard, which she did until the time of her illness in September 2003. She was a constant testimony of the Church to her family and friends. She was a joy to listen to as she shared stories of the pioneers, Church history, the scriptures, and her family roots in Switzerland. Her life revolved around Church and family, and she truly lived the principle of her favorite passage, the 100th Psalm, "Serve the Lord with gladness." Lucile was an example to her family and a wonderful resource of family history information and events. All that knew her will miss her.

She is survived by her children: Roger W. Butterfield (Sandra) of Kaysville, Utah; Sherry A. Walton (Roger) of Huntington Beach, California; Lynn Ward (Jerry) of Yakima, Washington; Brent A. Butterfield (Marshel) of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Surviving brothers and sisters include John Alvon Glauser, Helen Skidmore, Gloria Combe, and Reed Glauser. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Alton, her sister, Ruby Jackson, and her brother, Floyd Glauser, all preceded her in death.

A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City, Friday, August 6, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 7, at the Colonial Hills 1st Ward chapel, 1455 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City, UT. A viewing will precede the funeral from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Riverton City Cemetery, 12765 South 1400 West, Riverton, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lucile G. Butterfield can be made to LDS Hospital: The Deseret Foundation, 8th Ave and "C" St, Salt Lake City, Utah 84143.
