1913 ~ 2004

Jack Baker passed away August 1, 2004 following a battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 7, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John H. and Rose Cook Baker Sr. Married Estella Elizabeth "Beth" Hutchinson on March 26, 1935. She passed away Dec. 12, 1984.

Jack was a member of the LDS Church. He worked at cartographic and engineering work. Started with the Utah State Engineering Office in 1939 and retired in Ogden, Utah from the U.S. Forest Service in 1972. He belonged to the Ogden Elks, Ogden Engineers, Soil Conservation Society of America, and the Society of Surveying and Mapping of America. Served in the US Navy intelligence during World War II and acquired an outstanding collection of Pacific combat pictures and of the natives from this venture.

A dedicated environmentalist, Jack loathed seeing the billions of log feet of timber rot in the Northwest.

Survived by his son, Arthur R. Tanner (Littleton, CO); son-in-law, Robert Carabine (Sandy); two daughters-in-law, Jerre Baker (St. George) and Linda Tanner (Sandy); seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his companion of 17 years, Gene K. Shaw; a brother, Quinton Hal; two sisters, Myrtle Morgan and Ruth Bell; a son, Bruce; a daughter, Sharon Carabine; a granddaughter, Desiree Tanner; and great- grandson, Scott Sieben.

Funeral services will be held Sat., August 7, 2004 at 12 Noon at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 E. 10600 S. in Sandy, Utah where family and friends may visit from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
