Coach: Colby Knight, 2nd year. Prior to taking the Lions' job last year, Knight coached for three years at Duchesne. He played for his dad at American Fork High, then moved on to college ball at Southern Utah and the University of Utah.

Key players: At a camp at BYU this summer, Lions senior quarterback Blake Francom was impressive and was rated among the top five signal-callers there. At 6-foot-5, he has a good view of the field and a great arm. His main target will be senior speedster Nate Quist. Senior running back Steve Wall should get most of the carries in the backfield.

Strengths: The Lions have one of the better throwing quarterbacks in the region and state, so they should move the ball. They are again strong in the skill positions and have a load of enthusiastic young players. A strong home region schedule also should help.

Question marks: The Lions were a senior-laden team last year, which means they don't have much experience returning. How the young offensive line provides pass protection and opens holes for the running game likely will be the key to Payson's success. The Lions only average about 210 pounds on both sides of the line, so they're a small bunch by football standards.

Last season: 1-9, fifth place in Region 6

Projected Region 6 finish: Fifth place

Postseason possibilities: The Lions are still a couple of years away from tasting postseason play again.
