Due to a production error, some Sunday papers contained an incorrect D8 jump page. The missing text follows in italics:
UTAH jump:
"They played more efficiently and exe-cuted better. And then, as all teams do once they get on a roll and believed they could win, they got better and better and better."
COUGARS jump:
Two other 2003 quarterbacks, Todd Mortensen and Lance Pendleton, are not on the 2004 roster. Arizona State transfer Mike Affleck, after toying with enrolling at Utah or Utah State, will now walk on at BYU.
If the Cougars had to play a game on Monday, the starter would be the youngest, John Beck (6-foot-2, 205 pounds), who emerged during spring drills as the front-runner.
"I feel better about my quarterback situation going into this season than the last two years," coach Gary Crowton said.
He will look hard at his 2003 starter, Berry, in early two-a-days to see if he makes a move on the youngest Beck.
"We're better because we are more experienced," Crowton said. "John came out of spring ahead of the others and I want to look hard at Berry and give them the benefit of the doubt because of that injury (hand) and see how he does."
HARMON jump:
The last time Beck saw this was when he was named the starter going into his senior year at Mountain View High in Mesa, Ariz., circa 1999. Not only was Beck ignored but so were his teammates on preseason all-state honor rolls. Expectations were middle-of-the-pack in league play.
Sounds just like now.
