1929 ~ 2004

James "Herb" Hopes passed away Monday night, September 20, 2004 at Cottonwood Hospital, Murray, Utah.

Born to Edgar and Ruth Mundy Hopes on July 30, 1929, in Eureka, Utah. He married Betty Ann Tenney on December 29, 1956 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salt Lake.

He is survived by his wife Betty; two sons, Jim and Danny (Kris); four grandchildren, James and Samantha of Rich Hill, Missouri and Ben and Natalie; sister Bessie (Pete) Oliver; sister-in-law, Barbara Hopes; and brother Marion (Merle) Hopes. Preceded in death by parents; and three brothers, Don, Tom, and Howard.

Herb started his working life as a miner in Eureka. He served his country in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 in Korea and Japan. He returned home to Eureka and shortly after was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. While spending three years recovering from his injuries at the Veterans Hospital he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Tenney. He graduated from Stevens-Henager Business College in 1957. He started a 27-year career with the Utah State Tax Commission in 1960. He coached his sons in Little League Baseball for seven years and supported them throughout all of their activities. He loved to golf, bowl, hunt, fish and camp. He was a great fan of all the local sports teams. He derived great pleasure in helping people in any way he could. He loved and enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren.

Graveside services for family at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, 12:30-3:00 p.m., at his home, 1879 E. 1730 S. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to: Westminster St. Mark's Nursing Scholarship Fund, Attn: Development, 1840 So. 1300 E., Salt Lake City, UT 84105.
