OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Six people, including three children, who tried to escape a house fire died Sunday after getting trapped in the garage, authorities said.

"There were burglar bars on the windows, and we think that hindered them getting out," Oklahoma City Fire Department Maj. Brian Stanaland said. He added that neighbors had tried in vain to rip out the bars blocking their escape.

The victims apparently were overcome by smoke, but the state medical examiner's office was investigating the causes of death.

The victims were identified as Jack Somers-Wilder and his wife, Connie Soners-Wilder; their children Daniel, 19, Leisylle, 17, and Aimy, 11; and Kayla Hayes, 15, a teenage neighbor who had spent the night.

It took about an hour to extinguish the morning blaze.
