JUDITH ORTIZ COFER, poet and English professor at the University of Georgia, author of "An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio," will speak and read from her work, Thursday, 7 p.m., Jay Lees Courage Theater, Jewett Center for the Performing Arts, Westminster College, 1840 S. 1300 East.

JOEL LONG, poet and author of "Winged Insects," is a teacher of English and creative writing at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School. He will read from his work and sign his new chapbook, "Chopin's Preludes," Thursday, 7 p.m., The King's English Bookshop, 1511 S. 1500 East.

REUVEN FIRESTONE, professor of medieval Judaism and Islam at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles and author of "Journeys in the Holy Lands" and "Jihad: The Origin of the Holy War in Islam," will present the Sterling M. McMurrin Lecture on Religion and Culture, Thursday, 7 p.m., Salt Lake Main Library, 210 E. 400 South. Sponsored by the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah.

SUSAN SAMPLE and SHAWN FAWSON, local poets, will read from their work, Friday, 7 p.m., The King's English Bookshop, 1511 S. 1500 East.

KOLETTE MONTAGUE, the Utah Poetry Society's Poet of the Year 2000, will present a poetry workshop, Saturday, 2-3 p.m., the Library Store at Library Square, 210 E. 400 South.
