DRAPER HISTORIC THEATRE, 12366 S. 900 East, will hold auditions for "Peter Pan" on Saturday, 1-4 p.m. This will be the Caird-Nunn version adapted for the Royal Shakespeare Company, not the more familiar Bernstein musical. According to artistic director Kevin McClellan, this production combines acting, puppetry and dance. He promises it will be "unlike anything ever performed in this area."
Auditions are open to male and female actors, puppeteers and dancers 8 and older. All roles will be cast as age/gender-appropriate as possible, although young adults in children's roles and girls cast as "lost boys" will be considered. Peter Pan will be played by a young man, 12 years or older.
Performers may audition in one or more of these ways, depending on the roles being sought:
1. Deliver a prepared monologue one to two minutes in length and performed as if speaking to another person. Pieces from published plays are recommended.
2. Read an assigned passage from the script.
3. Learn and perform a passage of dance.
4. Operate a puppet to a piece of dialogue. Puppets and scripts will be furnished, but auditioners may also bring their own.
Specific roles for adult men include the Storyteller, Mr. Darling/Captain Hook, Smee and pirates (some pirates will be puppets). Roles for women include Mrs. Darling, Liza, Nana (actress with rod-marionette) and mermaids. Roles for girls include Wendy, Tiger Lilly, Tinkerbell (an actress with a puppet) and mermaids. Roles for boys include Peter, John, Michael and the lost boys.
There are other roles for puppeteers. Those interested in helping with puppet construction should call McClellan at 792-8558, or e-mail kevin@makeascene.com.
THE GRAND THEATRE, 1575 S. State, is holding auditions for the musical "Man of La Mancha" on Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. by appointment only (957-3322). Robin Wilks Dunn is directing. Roles are available for men and women, 16 and older. Come prepared with 16-32 bars of a Broadway or traditional musical-theater song. Bring a resume and current photograph. Rehearsals begin March 26, and play dates are May 6-21.
BOUNTIFUL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is holding auditions on Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon at 755 S. Main, Bountiful, for two original one-act plays, "A Lady for an Hour" and "Slave or Master," both written by Dale White. "A Lady for an Hour" has a small cast of two women and two men, all over 18. "Slave or Master" requires a cast of experienced actors with dance experience, with some smaller parts that don't require dance.
Come prepared with a one-minute, memorized monologue, preferably a dramatic piece. Both shows, part of BPAC's mainstage season, will be presented in tandem each evening. The writer/director also anticipates that both pieces will be turned into television productions.
Auditioners should bring a resume and a current photograph. Play dates are April 13-30. Call 294-7469 if you are unable to attend the scheduled auditions.
