Preps of the week

PAT BURNS, Wasatch: This senior tailback pounded out 160 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries last week to help the Wasps eke out a narrow 3A first-round victory over North Sanpete.

On the season, Burns has racked up 1,152 yards and nine touchdowns on 192 carries for Wasatch, which improved to 9-2 with the victory.

Burns, who is also a starting point guard on Wasatch's basketball team, will need to be at his best this Saturday when Wasatch travels to Hurricane in the 3A quarterfinals.

CASEY SPEREDON, Granger High: Even when games get tense, this junior responds positively.

"She plays with a lot of determination and character," said Lancer volleyball coach Kristin Estes. "She leads the team by her example and her work ethic. I have never heard her say a negative thing to her teammates, even when the going gets tough. She stays positive, even in difficult situations."

Speredon is also a basketball player and maintains a 3.2 GPA. She led the Lancer hitters in their win over Murray with 22 kills, seven serving aces and three blocks. In the team's loss to Cottonwood two days later, she earned 21 kills, six blocks and three aces.
