I'm up early this November morning, facing the bitter pill of disappointment at the outcome of the gravel pit referendum. But as those feelings subside, I am now left with acceptance, pride and resolve.
This pill is easier to swallow because I had a choice and a voice. Dolan, Boyer and Wal-Mart did win this one, but not by very much. The fact that there was such a strong and successful grass-roots organization is evidence the "good old boy" network in Sandy is weakening.
I'm extremely proud of the grass-roots organization spearheaded by Save Our Communities. I'm exceptionally proud of the Utah Supreme Court championing the citizens' right to have a say and making Sandy city rewrite the referendum in clear and concise language. And, last but not least, I can continue to vote with my pocketbook. For me, a cheap pair of underwear doesn't mean a good quality of life. Quality of life comes from fairness, balance and not letting economic bullies blackmail me into thinking they can do anything they want.
