PROVO — Eight former University of Utah baseball players will have 18 months to pay back almost $6,300 in restitution fees for their prank of "red-washing" the giant stone Y on Provo's east mountain in May.

They will each be responsible to pay $50 per month for 18 months starting in December, 4th District Judge Lynn Davis ruled Wednesday

The group of eight men were originally charged with class B misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief after they painted red U's all over the huge letter.

But after the year and a half, the charges will be reduced to class A misdemeanors if the men have collectively paid back the $6,267.20 — the cost of painting multiple layers to cover the red graffiti.
