CENTERVILLE — One man died in a house fire after it appears he waited too long to get out Wednesday afternoon.

South Davis Metro Fire Agency was called to the fire that appeared to have started in a single unit of a four-plex condo near 1950 North and 750 West just after 2:30 p.m.

After fire crews forced their way into the unit, they found 48-year-old Chris Capps collapsed inside, according to Capt. Jeff Bassett. He said crews tried to revive Capps, but were unsuccessful.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to have started in a back bedroom. Bassett said the smoke and flames exited mostly through the bedroom window on the west side and caused little or no damage to any of the other units.

Damages are estimated to be $10,000 to the single unit.

All other residents of the complex were safely evacuated when crews arrived and were able to re-enter their homes later Wednesday, Bassett said.
