Utes, Cougars, Wildcats begin quest for Sweet 16 berth today

The 3 Utah schools will play at Ute Field

Extra bleachers are being placed at Ute Field, and for good reason. Three Utah college soccer teams — and an out-of-state team led by a former Beehive State standout — put their postseason hopes on the University of Utah's soccer field today in NCAA tournament action.

After today's first-round doubleheader and a Saturday showdown between the winners, one team will advance to the Sweet 16.

BYU kicks off the twin bill with an instate contest with Weber State. The 17th-ranked Cougars hope to kick back into the high gear they were playing in earlier this season, when they jumped out to an 11-0-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking. The Wildcats, meantime, come in on a roll, having won seven straight en route to capturing the Big Sky championship.

The nightcap pits the Utes against Arizona at 7 p.m. Utah won the MWC regular-season title and was selected to play host, but the Utes fell to the Wildcats earlier this season, a 1-0 overtime road defeat in September. The U. will be challenged to score thanks to a Salt Lake native. Wildcats' goalie McCall Smith, who prepped at Skyline High, topped the Pac-10 in saves and saves per game this year.
