"Players love to play in tournaments," Utah Valley State coach Dick Hunsaker said. "This is an exciting way to open the season. It is a good opportunity to get exposure on the ticker early."

Iowa is one of four teams hosting regional rounds in the Guardians Classic. Kentucky, Texas and West Virginia are also region rounds.

The top team from each site will play in Kansas City next week.

Utah Valley State split its first two exhibition games. They beat Westminster 81-72 and lost to Mesa State 59-57. Sylvester Allison led the Wolverines in scoring in both games by scoring 18 and 12 points.

Colgate finished 12-16 last year and is picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League. They return three starters from last years team, led by senior guard Alvin Reed's 12.8 points a game.

"Colgate is a very experienced team and well-coached," Hunsaker said. "They will be a daunting task to open the season."
