MIDVALE — A police SWAT team was involved in a standoff with a known gang member late Sunday after the 28-year-old allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.

At press time, the man had barricaded himself in an apartment near 910 E. Canyon Ridge Way (7450 South) and police had positioned themselves around the perimeter of the residence.

Midvale police received a 911 call about 7:45 p.m. that the man had forced his way into his girlfriend's apartment and assaulted her, Midvale Sgt. John Salazar said. Police arrived to find the man had fled on foot.

Police spent about 45 minutes searching for him using a K9 unit, when the occupant of a nearby apartment came out and said the man had been holding him hostage. The resident escaped the apartment when the 28-year-old went into the bathroom, Salazar said.

Police knocked on the apartment but there was no response. They tried to enter but the door was barricaded. Police were unable to contact the man on his cell phone, Salazar said.

Police were assuming the man was armed. Salazar said he is known to be a member of a Rose Park gang and was recently released from prison.
