Fred P. Lampropoulos has been named "Business Executive of the Year" by the Utah Manufacturers Association.

Lampropoulos has worked in the medical device industry for more than 25 years. In 1987, after serving as the chairman and chief executive officer of Utah Medical, he founded his own medical device company in Utah, Merit Medical Systems Inc., where he currently serves as chairman and CEO.

Lampropoulos holds more than 100 patents on devices used in the diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Since 1987, Merit Medical has grown from a start-up company to a publicly traded company forecasting revenues of more than $170 million in 2005. The company employs 1,500 people and has manufacturing and distribution facilities in Utah, Texas, Virginia, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Lampropoulos also serves on a number of boards and commissions, including the Salt Lake Chamber, the National Advisory Board of the University of Utah, the American Heart Association of Utah, the MBA Advisory Board of Westminster College and the Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts.

Lampropoulos is an honorary colonel in the Utah National Guard and received the 2003 Governor's Medal for Science and Technology. In 2004, he ran for governor of Utah.
