POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A 2-year-old boy and his parents were struck and killed by a commuter train after the father tried to drive around a railroad crossing gate, officials said.

Albert Renteria, 28, his wife, Martiza Gomez, 24, and son Daniel Renteria died Sunday night. No one aboard the train was injured.

Renteria and another driver tried to go around the crossing gate, sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal said. The first driver made it.

Witnesses reported that the gate was down for an extended period, Leljedal said, but sheriff deputies were still investigating how long.
