A man jumped an estimated 250 feet to his death Wednesday in Provo Canyon.
Orem police responded about 12:30 p.m. to a report of a possible suicide situation involving a man in a white jacket atop a cliff about a quarter-mile up Provo Canyon on U.S. 189.
Despite the efforts of police who joined the man on the cliff and attempted to talk him out of taking his own life, the man jumped to his death about 2 p.m.
"We talked to him for the better part of 90 minutes," said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards. "It's very sad."
Traffic slowed on U.S. 189 during the 90-minute standoff as motorists tried to determine the reason police cars were parked on the side of the road. Spectators who pulled over to get a closer look were asked by police to leave the scene.
