HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — A convicted sex offender accused of abducting a 17-year-old girl apparently shot and killed himself and the girl escaped uninjured Thursday after police pulled over the car they were in, authorities said.
An Amber Alert had been issued for the girl, Dialys Ramos, and 39-year-old Robert Laird after they disappeared Wednesday. Authorities said he had left behind a suicide note.
The girl jumped out of the car soon after it was stopped by two Highway Patrol units, said Lt. Roger Reyes of the Florida Highway Patrol. Authorities were alerted when a driver who was aware of the Amber Alert spotted them on Florida's Turnpike, he said.
