Marchant's 22 points not enough for Utah State

LOGAN — Ali Aird Marchant logged game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds in Utah State's 71-70 loss to Montana in Friday's season opener for both women's teams.

Marchant hit eight of 10 shots from the field and recorded six offensive rebounds in 22 minutes of play.

Teammate Taylor Richards chipped in 16 points and four assists, while Brittany Tressler and Jessica Freeman scored 10 for the Aggies.

Montana was led by Katie Edwards, who scored 21 points while playing all 40 minutes for the Grizzlies.

Utah State trailed by seven points at 55-48 with 10:43 remaining before tying the game at 60-60 with 4:27 left. However, the Aggies could never get the lead. After USU pulled within 69-68 on a Richards layup with :08 left, Montana's Laura Cote hit two free throws and USU could manage only a layup by Marchant at the buzzer.
