Slain physicist's girlfriend dies as police close in

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The girlfriend of a poisoned nuclear physicist was found dead just days before police were going to arrest her on murder charges.

Investigators said they did not know how Tamara Rallo died and would not speculate whether the 52-year-old woman committed suicide after learning she was about to be charged.

John Mullen, a 67-year-old nuclear physicist, died in 2004, within hours of complaining of an upset stomach at his home. Investigators determined that he was killed by a large dose of arsenic placed in a health supplement drink.
