Obituary: John Richard Amundsen, Sr.

John Richard Amundsen, Sr. 1922 ~ 2005 Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Richard Amundsen Sr. passed away on Nov. 17, 2005, in Park City, Utah. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but we rejoice in the knowledge that he is with his eternal companion, our mother Elizabeth. John was born on February 14, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah , to Betsy Ellefsen and Hyrum Joseph Amundsen Sr. He spent most of his life in Bakersfield, California, where he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Frances Gage. They had 43 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death, on June 12, 1989. John served proudly in the 24th INF Division, 3rd Engineers in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He participated in three D-day landings and honorably served overseas for four years. Dad loved his job as a petroleum engineer and worked in oilfields all over the US, but most often in Wyoming and California, where he made many friends. A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Dad served honorably in many callings, including 12 years as a temple worker in the Los Angeles temple. As the son of Norwegian immigrants he was always proud of his heritage and culture, and included his children and grandchildren in trips to Norway to see the fjords his mother had talked about. His love of travel and adventure took him all over the United States, Europe, The South Pacific, South America and China, where he climbed the Great Wall in his seventies. Dad was unfailingly kind and generous, and above all, honest. He was always available to his children and grandchildren when we needed someone to talk to, and was always willing to give us the benefit of his experience and whatever else we needed. John is survived by his four children, John Amundsen Jr. (Jonell), Karen Amundsen (Neal Ostler), Michael Amundsen (Karen), and Kathy Winn (Clive); his brother Hyrum Amundsen Jr., 23 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. Jeg Elsker De Bestefar! Family and friends may call Sunday evening, from 4-6 p.m. November 20, 2005, at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem..
