Hundreds of sheep are driven along Sol square during the annual parade through Madrid on Sunday. The parade is held to protest the destruction of the country's ancient routes that were used to lead livestock to the high pastures for the summer months in late May and early June and back to lower pasture in early October. The system evolved during the Middle Ages and endured until the 20th century but then broke down due to industrialization and the movement of country people to the cities.
