Train wreck, tanker leak forces homes to evacuate

MOMENCE, Ill. (AP) — Two freight trains collided south of Chicago Thursday morning, injuring three crew members and forcing the evacuation of homes down wind of the tracks after flammable alcohol leaked from a tanker car, authorities said.

A Union Pacific train was headed to Little Rock, Ark., when it struck the Norfolk Southern train, headed to Pittsburgh, Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said. He said two houses about 55 miles south of Chicago were evacuated because of the leak.

The spilled alcohol was contained by afternoon, Kankakee County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency said.
