One man died and another was seriously injured Sunday night in what police were calling a gang-related fight in the Avenues area of Salt Lake City.
The incident took place just before 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Terrace Hills Park, off Terrace Hills Drive (900 East) near 11th Avenue. Neighbors reported hearing between 10 and 30 gunshots.
Salt Lake City police said a 35-year-old man died from one or more gunshot wounds and a 51-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition with multiple stab wounds.
A third man sustained minor stab wounds.
The name of the shooting victim was not released Sunday.
"We don't know how many people were involved; we're still trying to determine that," Salt Lake City police detective Dwayne Baird said. "We believe there were rival gang members involved."
A total of eight people were taken into police custody following the melee.
Participants in the fight had left the park by the time police arrived, but witnesses gave officers a description of a van seen fleeing the scene. Police located and stopped the van and arrested its six occupants.
Two other people were arrested after they drove the victims to LDS Hospital, Baird said.
"We don't know what their involvement was," Baird said of those who were arrested. "But hopefully we will file charges once we find out how the suspects were involved."
It was not clear Sunday whether the people who were arrested included the person who shot the 35-year-old man, nor was it clear whether many participants in the fight escaped arrest.
"We're looking for anybody that may have been involved," Baird said.
KSL-TV reported police found knives and shell casings from an assault-type rifle in the parking lot and that several weapons were recovered from vehicles. Baird could not confirm that report.
No bystanders or local residents were injured or involved, Baird said.
