A vacant home on the west side of Salt Lake City was destroyed by fire early Sunday with damage estimated at $170,000.

No one was injured, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, said Assistant Battalion Chief Dennis McKone of the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

The fire began about 2:35 a.m. near 1500 South and 1000 West. When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed with flames rising as high as 50 feet, McKone said.

The house had been condemned and boarded up since August, but McKone said it is possible transients may have been in the home. He said the fire began in the basement under the stairwell, and the floor was burned out by the time firefighters arrived.

It took 19 firefighters, three engines and a ladder truck about 45 minutes to control the blaze, McKone said.
