Audiences generally have an appetite for horror films in the weeks leading up to Halloween — and last weekend was no exception.
Of the three new films that went into wide release, Rupert Wainwright's remake of "The Fog," the 1980 cult favorite by John Carpenter about shipwreck victims who return for revenge 100 years later, opened at No. 1 with $12.2 million in estimated ticket sales. That is considerably less than Sony earned last year at this time with the horror film "The Grudge," which opened with $39.1 million.
Overall, the box office is down 18.1 percent from last weekend.
