Your editorial on "Gas guzzling Americans" (Page A16, Nov. 1) misses the point. It is national transportation policy to use unlimited quantities of gasoline. Economics is as much about what we give up with various policies as what we get. In looking forward, look backward, considering a counter-factual which has the United States not making heavy public investment in freeways. Had this been the case, we would have a much more balanced transportation system using much less gas. The lesson is clear, return to a free market in transportation as an antidote to our gas guzzling.
