SANTAQUIN — A 37-year-old mother and her young son died Sunday afternoon in a rollover on I-15 just south of here.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Sheldon Riches said the accident occurred about 3:25 p.m. when the woman's northbound Chrysler van went off the side of the road. She apparently overcorrected, the van veered into the median and rolled three times, entering the southbound lanes and coming to a rest on the west side of the freeway, Riches said.
The woman, who was partially ejected, was crushed beneath the van, he said. Her son, believed to be between the ages of 3 and 5, was ejected and also was crushed by the rolling van, Riches said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of the victims were not released Sunday, pending notification of relatives. Riches said the two are believed to be from the St. George area.
The cause of the accident is being investigated. Riches said there was no sign of drug or alcohol use, and the van was not speeding.
The southbound side of the freeway was reduced to one lane for several hours.
