PROVO (AP) — Hundreds of Provo residents already have voted in Tuesday's municipal election through a new policy allowing absentee voting without a reason.

More than 350 people had voted as of Thursday, and early voting is an option for registered voters until 6 p.m. today.

"It's been crazy," City Recorder LaNice Groesbeck said. "I haven't had a real lunch break in three weeks."

Early voting began as soon as the ballots were printed in mid-October, and the city already has run out of the current absentee envelopes. Groesbeck is using old envelopes listing her predecessor, Marilyn Perry, as the city recorder.

Groesbeck suspects voters are flocking in for the hotly contested mayoral rematch between incumbent Lewis Billings and Dave Bailey.

To accommodate the crowds, Groesbeck kept her office open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, even though the city offices usually are closed on Fridays.
