I can understand why young Bryce Christensen (Readers' Forum, Nov. 5) is concerned about safety. He's growing up in an age of terrorists, wars and natural disasters. It probably seems to him that the world is falling apart; but I'd like to give him a word of caution. No politician can keep you safe. Neville Chamberlain promised the free world "peace in our time" when I was a few years younger than Bryce. Instead of peace, we had five years of horrible warfare in which 20 million people died.
For 230 years this nation has been the safest place on earth — not because our leaders have made safety their main priority, but because of the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution. If you want safety, vote for those people whose main priority is upholding the Constitution.
