Rep. David Ure's "My View" submission (Nov. 3), in which he explains his opposition to the Legacy Parkway settlement, is a testament to pettiness. Ure doesn't criticize the settlement's details; he bemoans that it was negotiated. Yet through negotiation, drivers get their road, sensitive wetlands gain some protection and no one files another lawsuit to curb illegal conduct.
Nor does he criticize — or take responsibility for — our state's actions that cost us $200 million when a federal court unanimously halted Utah's violation of federal law. Instead he complains about $27 million spent to study the project's environmental impacts. Compare the numbers: that's $173 million saved through prudence and negotiation.
The only thing sacrificed through this collaborative process was an opportunity to try shoving something down the throats of a certain segment of Utah voters.
