The Constitution consists of words. To intentionally disregard the meaning of those words, as Steve Cuno advocates (Readers' Forum, Nov. 2), is to disregard the document itself.

We should amend the Constitution rather than pretend it already says what we want to hear. Voting rights were established and slavery was abolished through proper constitutional channels, not through judicial activism.
