Two men indicted in U.S. District Court for hate crimes were ordered by a federal magistrate to be detained pending a trial.
Monday's hearing was short, lasting just minutes, but U.S. Magistrate Judge Samuel Alba said there was sufficient information to keep Robby Wayne Baalman and David Lance Gardner in federal custody.
Baalman had two warrants, one of which has since been recalled. Alba said he would not consider a release for anyone with a warrant.
In Gardner's case, a violent criminal history and two cases of being a fugitive from justice will keep him in custody, Alba said.
"I find that he is, in fact, a danger to the community," Alba said.
Both men are being held in county jails awaiting trial.
They, along with Keith Wayne Cotter, were charged in a late evening attack on a black man March 12. All three men are believed to have ties to white supremacist organizations.
If found guilty, each of the three men faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
