I was irritated with reporting on local TV channels and with the response measures to a recent accident on West 5400 South. A student, on the way to school, was struck and severely injured by a car. Local TV news made great efforts to emphasize that the student was not crossing at a designated crosswalk, seemingly faulting the student. There are crosswalks at 4800 West and the next at 5600 West — eight full city blocks between designated crossings. There is great temptation to cross outside a crosswalk. One block near 5600 West has no sidewalk.
There have been several accidents on this stretch of highway, some resulting in fatalities. A mobile radar speed indicator was placed near the location of the accident. Other measures need to be taken to prevent more people from being injured or killed.
